What is SIOP?
SIOP is an acronym for Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol. The SIOP model consists of 8 components; lesson preparation, building background, comprehensible input, strategies, interaction, practice/application, lesson delivery, and review and assessment. "The theoretical underpinning of the model is that language acquisition is enhanced through meaningful use and interaction" (pg. 16). The model provides teachers with a framework for engaging ELL students and developing the four language processes; listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The model gives the general education teachers the tools needed to ensure that ELL students are able to be successful in the classroom and develop them into productive citizens in a democratic society.
As a History and Government teacher, it is essential for me to get through to English learners the material covered in my classes. It is important for helping the students to move on to the next grade or to graduate, but it is more important that they learn the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in this country. In order to gain these goals, I must utilize the strategies and components listed throughout the text to structure a curriculum that will be effective.
