Component #6: Practice/Application
The practice/application component involves students getting to actually use and demonstrate the knowledge they have gained from through instruction. This can be done in a variety of ways, and, like all aspects of the SIOP model, should incorporate time for students to practice reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Teachers can also incorporate the multiple intelligence theory to create opportunities for the engagement of all students. Hands-on materials can be used during practice to help the points to stick in the minds of ELLs. Learning is not only a mental exercise, so teachers should be sure that students are given opportunities to actively engagement with the material and incorporate kinesthetic learning in lessons.
