Component #1 - Lesson Preparation
The first step in education is always planning and preparation. Learning objectives or the lack thereof can make or break a lesson and as with all teaching, they are essential in the SIOP model. Content and language objectives ensure that ELL students are able to acquire both the material being covered as well as becoming more proficient in the four language processes. Teachers should be sure to make students aware of the daily objectives, having them written where students can see them is only a part of the process. Teachers should verbally read the objectives at the beginning to guide the students learning, then again at the end of the class to reinforce the daily learning objectives.
Another important feature of lesson preparation is the use of supplementary materials, which, "supports different learning styles and multiple intelligence's" (pg. 33). Supplementary materials can include but are not limited to pictures, visuals, multimedia, and demonstrations. Visuals can aid the general education teacher in helping to relate the material to ELL students in a way that is tangible to them.
