Component #8 - Review and Assessment
Assessment takes place throughout the entirety of the lesson, not simply at the end of the class period. When it comes to ELLs the teacher needs to remember that, “one single assessment approach is insufficient for all students (pg. 168). Vocabulary should be reviewed consistently throughout the unit as well as key content concepts to ensure students stay on track. Providing feedback both orally and written is important, but teachers should use body language and facial expressions throughout the lesson to give positive reinforcement to ELLs. The universal appreciation of body language and facial expressions will ensure that ELLs understand the positive reinforcement. Formal assessments can be adapted to ELL’s level in order to provide the teacher with an accurate assessment of the individual students’ growth. There are many ways to adapt assessments and teachers should use a varied approach in order to reach each individual student. Informal assessments can be performed throughout the lessons in many ways and are useful in assessing on the spot comprehension.
