Component #5 – Interaction
It is important for English Learners to be provided with class time in general education classes to use “academic language” and interact with other students and the teacher. The text outlines many of the benefits that stem from utilizing interaction in the classroom; brain stimulation, increased motivation, reduced risk, more processing time, and increased attention (pg. 116). ELL’s need to learn oral language skills and group work can often provide students with the ability to practice and receive assistance from other students as well as the teacher. The group work should be varied, “effective SIOP classes are characterized by a variety of grouping structures, including individual work, partners, triads, small groups of 4 or 5, cooperative learning groups, and whole group (pg. 126). This varied approach will provide ELL’s with a variety of approaches to perfect their language skills.
