Component #3 – Comprehensible Input
Several factors are involved in making content comprehensible English Language Learners. Teachers need to be sure they are speaking at a level that is comprehensible to all students and pay attention to their own vocabulary and sentence structure. This will ensure that ELL’s are able to follow because the rate of speech is slow enough for them to decipher and the words chosen are at a level that they can understand. As with component #2, teachers should avoid using idioms that are incomprehensible to ELL’s and even to students that are from a different region. Explaining expectations and instructions in a clear and step by step basis will ensure that students are equipped with the knowledge to complete their tasks. Using a variety of techniques in delivery and in assignments will also aid the students and ensure that you are reaching all students that learn better through different methods.
